Shopping Cart Money 225x300 Spend More Money to Save Time

Spend More Money to Save Time

By Joanne Chantigny

The other day, I caught myself doing exactly that.

Rush hour traffic, almost 5pm, kids were hungry and Tae Kwon Do practice was that evening.

Panic starts to set in realizing I have no idea what to make for supper.

As I was waiting at a red light I had two options of grocery stores to go to, both within the same distance away from where I was.

My thoughts were to drive to the less expensive store.

For both stores, you need a coin to retrieve a shopping cart.  A different coin for each store might I add.

Still waiting at the light, I looked in the spot where I keep coins.

I only had a coin for the more expensive store.

Do I go to the expensive store, wait in line at customer service to exchange coin and go back out to parking lot to get a cart?

Yes I could have.

Did I want to take the time to do that?

No I did not.

My split second decision was to go to the more expensive store.  Why?

I needed to get my shopping done, go home, start supper and feed kids all in time for the evening class.

As I was driving home, I realized what I had done.

Spent more money to save time.

Sometimes spending more money to save you time is the better choice.

In my case, I could have easily saved money by taking the extra few minutes to go to the less expensive store.

I spent $30-$40 more just to save 20-30 minutes.

Now, I think back to how many other times I have done the same thing.

What about those times we bought fast food to save time instead of cooking at home.

Can you relate?

Here are some suggestions to help you save money and save time.

–       Plan ahead.  If you know you are going to be short on time, be sure to plan ahead.

–       Pack a Snack.  By packing your meals or snacks ahead of time, you will be less tempted to eat out.

–       Shop Once per Week.  Plan out your meals for the week and shop once.  You will avoid having to stop at the last minute to plan a meal.

Next time you are out doing your daily routine, pay attention to the little things.

Can you do something different to save money for your family and still save time?

With Love,
